Getting a piercing when you suffer from diseases like diabetes, haemophilia, immune disorder, contact allergy, chronic skin disease or cardiovascular abnormalities could cause complications. The best thing you can do is to discuss this with your general practitioner or doctor first. They can inform you if getting a piercing is safe in your case.

Are you planning on getting a new piercing? Great! Just make sure that you do some research to find a good piercer. You could, for example, ask for their portfolio. Online reviews might also help you find the right piercer. Additionally, you can ask acquaintances, friends, or family about their experience with a certain piercer.

My approach as a professional piercers is to work with your anatomy, not against it. The feasibility of the piercing will largely depend on your anatomy. Are you unsure whether you can get a specific piercing? Schedule a “Consultation” appointment! During this appointment, I can assess whether it is possible to perform the desired piercing or to explore the alternatives.

You cannot swim for the first 6 – 8 weeks with a new piercing. The water in both swimming pools and the sea are full of bacteria. When you do swim, those bacteria will get into your piercing, which can hinder the healing. The best advice would be to get pierced well ahead of summertime or right after it.

Are you considering a new piercing, while you already have an appointment for surgery? The advice would be to postpone the piercing until after your surgery. Most surgeons will ask you to take out all the jewellery to prevent electrocautery burns during surgery. Taking out the jewellery will cause your piercing to close up.

There will always be parents, employers, or partners who will disagree with your decision to go for a piercing. However, they should not prevent you from making your own decision. It is your body, your money, your life, and therefore your choice. You should only make your appointment when you are 100% sure!

According to Dutch law, I am not allowed to pierce an individual under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Alcohol reduces the number of platelets the body makes and their effectiveness. This results in more bleeding. Avoid the consumption of alcohol or other substances 24 hours before your appointment!

Do not forget to bring your ID, passport, or driving licence to the appointment. According to the guidelines of the GGD, you must first identify yourself before you can fill in the form. A picture will not be accepted. You never leave your house without your phone, so why not put your ID inside your phone case?

When it comes to piercing aftercare, sterile saline solution is the recommended choice. It helps reduce swelling, irritation, and stimulates blood circulation, all of which are beneficial for the healing process of your piercing. Avoid using aggressive products such as alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or soaps. Remember, patience is a virtue.

When getting a new piercing, implant grade titanium is the best material there is. It enables your piercing to heal faster and better compared to other materials. Acceptable alternatives that can be used for a healing piercing includes, titanium, niobium, solid gold, glass, or PFTE. Make sure to be well informed.

A lot of jewellery shops will tell you to twist your jewellery to prevent it from growing stuck. This is the most common misconception when it comes to piercings. It only does more harm than good. Do not touch your piercing unless you are applying the aftercare. This is the best way to let it heal as fast as humanly possible.

If you recently got a cartilage piercing in your ear avoid sleeping on it. The pressure on the jewellery will have negative effects on the healing of your piercing. A great way to avoid pressure is by using a neck cushion. Even if you sleep on the side that got pierced, you will avoid pressure on your new piercing. It is almost magical.

Avoid bleaching or dyeing your hair with a new cartilage piercing in your ear. Both bleaching and dyeing products contain harmful chemicals. When these chemicals get in contact with your piercing, it can cause a lot of complications. The best advice would be to bleach or dye your hair before getting pierced.

Avoid wearing bandanas, caps, hairbands, helmets, or headphones. They can put pressure on the jewellery. The pressure on the jewellery will have negative effects on the healing of your piercing. An example would be your piercing growing crooked. Depending on the piercing, earphones could be a great alternative to headphones.

During piercing, I use a longer piece of jewellery to make room for the swelling. This might be an issue if you recently got a cartilage piercing in your ear. In case of long hair, your hair might constantly get caught behind your piercing. You can avoid this by letting the jewellery stick out towards the front or by putting your hair up.
